FCI World Dog Show 2014 – Helsinki (FI), 8-10 August
The FCI main conformation event of the year is over and will remain in everybody’s mind as the symbol of what a perfectly well-organised dog show should be.
Year 2014 was for Finland the 125th anniversary of their creation. It was a superb reason for the Finns to apply for hosting the 2014 FCI World Dog Show, 16 years after having had the pleasure to meet the dog scene on the occasion of the 1998 FCI World Dog Show, with an interesting entry of 15,300 dogs.

Two canine-themed books published during the jubilee year:
a 125th anniversary history of the Finnish Kennel Club, by Kaija Unhola was released in February
and a book written by Tapio Eerola about Finland's domestic breeds comes out in August.
Living with dogs
Kaija Unhola’s “Living with dogs” compiles the history of active life with dogs in Finland into one book. It describes vividly how the number of people being active with dogs has grown since the early years in 1880’s, how competitions and shows have become more and more popular and how the activities have become more diverse and international.
In addition to ordinary dog enthusiasts the book also introduces a group of known Finnish dog people like “the father of Finnish telephone” Daniel Johannes Wadén, author and poet Juhani Aho, President Urho Kekkonen and his wife Mrs Sylvi Kekkonen and General Olli Korhonen.
The book draws a clear picture of the development of dog activities as well as of the human’s best friend in Finland.

A book about Finnish breeds
Finnish dog breeds are a living culture heritage, a direct continuum from our ancestors from centuries back in time. Owning and leading an active life with Finnish dog breeds constitutes valuable work for culture heritage.
The editor in chief of the Finnish Kennel Club’s magazine Koiramme and all-rounder judge Tapio Eerola has written a book about Finnish breeds and aspires at raising the appreciation of culture heritage. This book, which is published in the 125 anniversary of the Finnish Kennel Club, is the first book that introduces together all five Finnish breeds: the Finnish Spitz, the Karelian Bear Dog, the Lapponian Herder, the Finnish Hound and The Finnish Lapphund.
The book describes what Finnish breeds are used for and how they are used these days. It also contemplates the prospects of the breeds.
The book was published in Finnish in August and it will be translated into English in the end of this year.
